As of today, November 1, 2010, I have exactly 4 months until my first day of classes at The University of Western Australia in Perth, Australia. Yes, that means day #1 is February 28th. It may seem that this is awfully late to be beginning the spring semester, but due to the flip of seasons (opposite hemisphere!!), I will technically be in Australia during their fall season, or as the Aussies call it "Semester 1." In short, 4 months from today, my hopeful and extremely anticipated "life-changing experience" will commence!
As many recommend, I created a blog, as I figured it would be the most efficient way of communicating, as the time difference is quite drastic (Perth is 13 hours ahead of Chi city). It still doesn't seem all that real that I will be gone, really gone, for all of this spring. And while the excitement definitely exists, the nerves haven't set in yet. At this point, I've only met one other UIUC student going on my specific program, and for one of the first times since being a college student, I won't be able to call/text a friend to watch a movie with me when I get bored on a random Tuesday evening. Culture shock much?!
I realize it's early to start this whole blog experience, but I truly want to remember this time in my life as much as humanly possible. I also don't want to hide behind my camera lens, remembering Australia simply through the numerous 3x5's I'm sure I will still take (reference: John Mayer's "3 x 5"). I want to be a traveler, not a tourist. We'll have to see how long my philosophical mentality lasts!
I probably won't be blogging much until my actual travel date rolls around. So until that time, hang loose!
